Idea for "Old Glory's 49th"
Inventor Charles Leonard Short points to gold star representing Territory of Alaska on his design for new national emblem. Short, a body-and-fender repairman, is an amateur geometrician at night. Drawing on his knowledge of symbolism, flag lore, and mathematics , Short came up with the design shown here after working on the idea since 1928. Talk of admitting Alaska as a state may bring Short's design into national prominence.
